New Vintage Yummies!

New vintage yummies in the miss tess vintage shop!  If you have little kidlets, check out the 2 adorable, super colorful children's dresses I found.  I am so jealous and wish I was 4 years old!

New Dresses! Big and Small!

I love blues and reds right now, and I imagine these fab red shoes with any of these three garments. Va va voom!

Red and Blue

This romper is a prime example of why I started a vintage shop. Too small for me to wear (I'm literally poured into this and can't bend over) but too good to pass up! Now instead of just buying it with the intention of reconstructing it (which really just means it hangs out in my closet for 1 year while I feel guilty) it can go to a good and loving home. All together now, awwww!

I'll write soon!

I've had a series of misadventures involving a penguin, some cheese and a pair of the wrong trousers. Oh wait, that's Grommit. . .

No really it was a misadventure with heat exhaustion, a broken camera card reader, and then a broken internet connection.  4 days without internet was maddening, sneaking into the coffee shop to use Ed's computer because John had the laptop...which also has the rough draft of my Atlanta write up! So, expect that up Monday!  I'm headed off to Raleigh to "Go Overboard" with miss Ileana!

I'll leave you with this pic, Butterfly Head.  Ever since I saw the amazing hat Philip Treacy made for Alexander McQueen I wanted some butterflies. Alas I live in a small town where it's difficult to find anything you want unless it's vintage clothing which is actually a pretty okay trade off.  Anyway, my long time friend Becca (since jr high!!! that's kinda crazy!) sent me these in the mail last week not knowing of my obsession.

Have a great weekend folks!

Best Thrift in Atlanta

While making my preparations to go to Atlanta (at 3 am 3 hours before leaving, that's how I roll) I did a quick google search of the area to find out where the thrift stores were. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there are tons, over 10 i

In Hot-Lanta!

Wahoo! I managed to get nearly all my things done, not sleep but still make it to Atlanta safely! The only drama was a very exciting 30 minute period including a majorly messed up order at burger king (2 salads+4 burgers +small soda does not =1 veggie burger and large soda) that seriously took 20 minutes to fix.  There were 9 employees on duty not counting the manager who is the one who actually ended up dealing with my order.  Not 5 minutes after getting back on the road, a  brick truck began careening and dropping bricks!  I stopped quickly enough that I didn't get a brick through my windshield, and it crumbled upon impact with the pavement so when all the bits rammed the undercarriage of my car it didn't seem to cause any damage.

Needless to say I pulled over for 20 minutes to give it a majorly head start, little did I know the freeway was FULL of brick trucks so I was a little bit panicky passing them :P

Anyway, I'm here safely and enjoying a nice little cafe called the Aurora in a pretty hip neighborhood that I have no clue what it's called.  I am avoiding the heat and bugs for now, I plan on browsing the shops a bit more once it isn't a zillion degrees out.

If any of you are in Atlanta, or withing driving distance, come out to the Indie Craft Experience! Here's the

Happy friday!

What a busy week!! I don't even know what I did really it was so busy. Roller derbying, painting my studio, organizing the entire house, memorial day bbq, new fridge, new stuff for my etsy vintage shop etc. Oi.

I guess I'll start off with the new exciting things in the shop. I added about 9 new items today, and a few more over the past few days. Here's a few of my favorites!

Black and White and Red!

I am heartbroken over not being able to fit into the lower left dress :( Totally totally heart broken.

I also got on the front page of etsy.com two times, whoa! I missed the first, but managed to get a screen cap of the 2nd:

Etsy Front Page!

I'm very pleased to have just been picked, and the front page is a major added bonus! In other news....I have a visitor right now. His name is Cris Crosse:

209: 365 Two Gnomes

He's for the Our Roaming Gnome flickr group, he just came from Denmark! We've been having a major blast, he's a good playmate even though we had a bit of a tiff the other day about whether my awesome fridge box is a plane or a sub.

210: 365 The Magical Box

We made up, though, so no worries. I also started a silly new flickr group based off of Jenny's amazing photo. . .

365 Days - #121

Read the comments to see how the group began..it's pretty funny. I used my mad photochop skillz (hahahha) to make this!

Pinecone Bra

If you have any giant pinecones, take your pic and post away! It should hopefully remain pervert free thanks in part to a. the subject matter not really being a fetish, as far as I know and b. I keep an eye out for the pool and I'll get rid of anyone who makes the slightest lewd comment.

Okay, I guess one more thing for this manic post...I made a new tutu for my flickr friend Jennoit!  She's going to race bicycles in it, how awesome is that!

207:365 Blue and Pink Tutu for you!

I just got an order of 600 yards of tulle in, so while I finish building my costuming site I'm offering them for sale on my etsy shop.   I love tutus and I'm excited to play with all the new colors! Plus tulle from the bolt is SO much easier to deal with so I can make tutu's without going nutso!  I think I have a problem. Anyway, have a great weekend guys! Mine is going to be spent working and trying to get my body to stop feeling like a giant knot after roller derby last night ;)

New Stuff in the Shop!

I guess I didn't mention this in my last post, but I opened up a etsy shop for my vintage clothes treasures!

It's a well known fact, or maybe I'm making this up but it's been true for me, but small towns have AMAZING thrift shops.  Ogden, UT was amazing for thrifting and I didn't realize it until I moved to So Cal where there are plenty of hipsters to steal all the awesome vintage shirts, there just really wasn't that much competition in UT.  No offense to hipsters, or to UT..just stating the facts, ma'am ;)

Now that I'm back in a small town and the only person with my taste shopping at the 3 thrift stores we have, I pretty much have free reign.  This has lead to some amazing treasures...but it always made me sad to pass up something totally divine that didn't fit me.  Obviously the solution was to open a shop for my vintage cloths and share my luck!  I added a new section to my shop called, "Vintage" which has a mini etsy inside of it, or you can go directly there via misstess.etsy.com

I'll be updating once or twice a week after I've thrifted, cleaned, repaired and photographed. There are some good treasures up right now, I made 2 mash ups to share my favs!

Yummy Pastels:

Yummy Pastels

Summer is for talking walks by the water and eating icecream, these super sweet garments in candy colors will put you in the mood!

Red, White and Blue:

Red White and Blue

It's almost memorial day, and soon after that will be the 4th of July! I don't know about you, but the next few months are devoted to picnics and bbq's.  What a better way to celebrate than with an amazing new dress.  The white one is my favorite, but it's much much too small.  Sometimes I can get away with something being too tight, but this literally has a 3" gap on the waistband. Cry cry cry.

Hope you guys have a great weekend, we are going to try to go camping..unless it keeps raining. If that's the case then I'm repainting my studio, yay!

Seam Finishing and Summer

First of all hello to any new readers coming over from Sew Mamma Sew! I just wrote an article for them called, "Seam Finishing Made Simple" so pop on over to check it out! This month is Women's Clothing Month over at Sew Mama Sew and there are all sort of wonderful articles. I especially like this one that Beki wrote about Full Bust Alterations. So helpful. Anyway it was great to write an in depth tutorial on something that I probably have spent too much time thinking about.  If Izzie reads this blogs she should be laughing, a mere 6 years ago I was laughing at the necessity of seam finishing. Or seam allowances. Or sewing properly period.  I've sewn all my life but it wasn't until college when I took my first, last and only sewing class.  My teacher was mean and we definately had a personality conflict. Izzie and I both made sure to change the assignment as much as possible but still be within her rules just to be bratty kids. FYI here's the skirt that I made for that class (first time doing a zipper, first time using flat fell seams, etc. Still doesn't have a hook and eye, though):

Wardrobe Remix day 147

I almost ALMOST got rid of it a year ago. Fortunately I'm too lazy, I mean busy, to get to the thrift store to drop things off. So, it stayed and I'm glad! I don't have the blouse that i made, though. It was hot pink cotton pique with orange contrast. I really don't remember what I did.  Izzie of course made something super beautiful, a long brown skirt that was an alteration of the pattern. I can't remember how she did the faux wrap closure but it was confusing, brilliant and amazing.  Anyway, long story short I was an obnoxious teenager who wasn't very good at sewing. So I feel very accomplished to have written an article about something I used to be so horrible at!

Sorry I haven't been good at updating, as usual. April was a whirlwind, spider bites, Asheville one weekend, Richmond the next, then Boston for 5 days working under incredible deadlines, Raleigh the next weekend and finals. I am so surprised I lived, let alone passed (with good grades!) all my classes except art history.  I have an incomplete, though, so hopefully the spirit that came over me and allowed me to write a 5 page paper on seam finishes will come again and write 15 papers on pre-Renaissance art.

Since school has been out I've been working feverishly on a shop update. Lots of new things that I'd been making for months but didn't have a moment to photograph. I finally opened up a little etsy shop for my vintage cloths and I even made Big, Bad, Reuse bags but I haven't taken a picture yet so I'll announce that later when I get that done.

I finally got a day to do a little goofing of yesterday and it was really great. I wrote about it on my flickr, so if you've already read this sorry. I'm copying and pasting :)

"Today was a really awesome day. Besides getting in one of those add downward spirals where it takes 4 hours to pack 4 items to ship (and not big items that require special packaging or going to the attic). Seriously, not sure what I was doing that whole time. Went to the PO as fast as I could since it closes at 4:30. Went to the Trent River Coffee Shop to get a bagel and some iced tea. I was so hot I was literally dripping, it was gross. I'm sure you wanted to know that.

"Last Saturday when honey and I went in, Ed the owner of the coffee shop, gave me someones number to call. He said we'd get along. So I called her today and left a message. Then by a miracle, she showed up at the shop about 20 minutes after I did! We talked for 2 hours. It was awesome. She's so creative and interesting, I'm excited to hang out with her more.

"After I left I met honey and the dog by the water, we walked with our doggy friends, talked to people, and eventually ended up at the "cow cafe" and got ice cream and talked to more strangers. Someone gave the rest of their cone to lily which she thought was dandy. On the way home we saw my friend Margaret from school, she is next to impossible to get a hold of since she rarely gets online, has no phone, and lives on a boat in the river. I missed the last day of school because honey had a medical emergency so I didn't get a chance to tell her I wanted to hang out with her this summer. We talked about education, and art, and all those good things.

"After we parted ways with Margaret we walked down the dark, quiet, tree-lined roads of the historic area. While I was gabbling on about how much Southern nights rock, and how beautiful the magnolia's smell etc etc etc it started to rain. Hard. So I said goodbye to honey and lily, I had my camera in a not-waterproof bag, and pedaled home as fast as I could. Magically, honey and lily got home 2 minutes after I did. And they hid under the Gothic church during the worst of the rain. So my honey runs faster than I cycle. Carrying a dog.

"It was a good night, helps me to remember why I like this place."

One more thiing

In case you haven't seen this, please go and watch.  Engineers explaining cats, hilarious!!

I especially love the "corporal cuddling" and yodeling techniques they taught.

Leaving for Richmond!

Hey guys! This is going to be very short. I am going to Richmond for the Spring Bada Bing in about 2.5 hours and I haven't finished my sewing, packed or brushed my hair.  So here's a few pictures of me with my hair done by my friend Jasmine and some outfits where my hair is brushed :)

Jasmine rocks, she cut and styled my hair and she did an AMAZING job!!

Jasmine did my hair!

Heather is very observant and noted that my sister and I are practically twins, save the hair. . .Check out this great mash up she did!

I finally admitted about 3 years ago when I saw a picture of the two of us sitting together that we MIGHT maaaybe have a family resemblance.  This proves that it is much, much more than that.

Moving on, John really liked my new 'do so he took me out and I decided to get a little fancy.  The Thai place here is really awesome and full of all those lovely gilded things and pictures of fancy pants royalty so my outfit fit in a bit.

161:365 New Pink 'do

Jasmine uses some hardcore hairspray, and I slept in the hair and wore it to school with out brushing it!! It might have been a bit less voluminous than the day before but it still looked pretty good!

Okey Dokey, that's it for now! I am making some brand new REUSE bags so here's a sneaky peaky preview!

Always Remember, REUSE!

Time to get back to work, I got to finish these bags before we leave in 3 hours!! AHHH!! Have a great weekend folks, and if you are in Richmond (or Driving distance) come say hi and see all the yummy handmade goods at the Spring Bada Bing!
